When LEGO® first revealed this set, I got an instant wave of nostalgia. Transformers was one of my childhood obsessions — Saturday morning cartoons, battered action figures, and that unforgettable line: “Autobots, roll out!”

I’ll admit, I’ve been dragging my feet on getting all three LEGO Transformers builds, but that’s changing this holiday season. Optimus Prime is on top of my list, as well as Bumblebee (10338) and Soundwave (10358).

Quick Facts

  • Set Number: 10302
  • Theme: LEGO® Icons / Transformers
  • Pieces: 1,508
  • MSRP: $179.99
  • Release: June 2022

What’s in the Box & Build Flow

Inside are eleven numbered bags, a sleek instruction booklet, and one of the most satisfying LEGO Icons builds to date. You start with the torso — a blend of Technic linkages and system bricks — then move on to those bold red-and-blue limbs. The entire build feels engineered with purpose, setting up for the moment you realize it really does transform without taking it apart.

Techniques & Details

The engineering here is pure LEGO wizardry. The cab folds in on itself beautifully, the legs compress just right, and the chest opens to reveal the Matrix of Leadership. Every hinge, clip, and rotation feels deliberate — not forced.

Display & Play Value

At about 13.5 inches tall, Prime dominates any display shelf. The bold colors pop under light, and the included Ion Blaster, Energon Axe, and Autobot logo tile add so much character. He’s poseable too — just handle the knees with care.

Comparisons: Bumblebee & Soundwave

LEGO 10338 Bumblebee brings a lighter, more approachable build with fewer pieces and smoother curves. His transformation is just as seamless, but his personality comes through in the bright yellow design. He’s smaller but bursting with charm.

LEGO 10358 Soundwave, on the other hand, is Prime’s Decepticon rival. He transforms into a cassette player with storage for Ravage and Laserbeak, includes a sound brick that plays classic voice lines, and looks menacing with dark blue armor.

Final Thoughts

Building LEGO 10302 Optimus Prime feels like revisiting your childhood through adult eyes. It’s challenging, nostalgic, and beautifully engineered. Adding Bumblebee and Soundwave completes the story — the cheerful scout, the noble leader, and the calculating Decepticon.

Would I recommend it? Absolutely. If you’ve ever shouted “Roll out!” or mimicked Soundwave’s voice as a kid, this is the LEGO set for you.
